Preparation and identification of Cu@ZIF-8 as a catalyst for the synthesis of pyran derivatives

A green and efficient approach for the synthesis of pyran derivatives was developed using Cu@ZIF-8 as a heterogeneous catalyst. Pyran-containing heterocycles are important structural units in pharmaceuticals and functional materials, and their synthesis benefits greatly from multicomponent strategies. In this work, aldehyde derivatives, malononitrile, and dimedone were reacted under mild conditions using a catalytic amount of Cu@ZIF-8 at 70 °C. The large surface area and porosity of ZIF-8 enabled effective immobilization of Cu²⁺ species, enhancing catalytic activity, stability, and reducing metal leaching. The catalyst was easily recovered by simple filtration and reused for at least four reaction cycles with minimal loss of performance. This catalytic system demonstrates a sustainable and operationally simple method for producing pyran derivatives with high efficiency and selectivity.
