Copper(II) Complex of 2-Hydrazinopyridine Supported on SBA-15: An Efficient and Reusable Catalyst for The Selective Monoarylation of Ammonia

A novel and highly efficient Cu(II)-based heterogeneous catalyst, SBA-15@bis(Py-2-NHNH2)-Cu(II), was synthesized via sequential surface functionalization of mesoporous SBA-15 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), cyanuric acid, and 2-hydrazinopyridine, followed by complexation with Cu(OAc)2. The catalyst was extensively characterized using FT-IR, solid-state 13C NMR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), confirming successful ligand grafting, effective Cu(II) coordination, and preservation of structural integrity. Under optimized base-assisted conditions in DMSO, SBA-15@bis(Py-2-NHNH2)-Cu(II) demonstrated excellent catalytic activity and broad substrate tolerance for the monoarylation of ammonia with various aryl halides. The catalyst exhibited negligible activity loss and copper leaching (<0.2%) in the first run and maintained its performance over five consecutive cycles.
