چکیده مقاله
Dimethyl ether (DME) is a non-toxic, eco-friendly and easily condensable gas that can be used both as a fuel and as a chemical feedstock [1]. Due to its high cetane number and high oxygen content (about 35 wt.%), which provides smokeless clean burning characteristics, DME is considered as an excellent clean burning transportation fuel alternate, especially for compression ignition engines [2].
DME can be produced by methanol dehydration. In this study, four γ-Al2O3 catalysts for methanol dehydration to DME were synthesized by precipitation of Al(OH)3 from aluminium sulfate solutions using different precipitation agents (Table 1). The activity of the catalysts was compared with a commercially available γ-alumina catalyst.
The result showed that the precipitation agents strongly affected the structural properties and catalytic performance. The catalyst produced from aluminium sulfate and sodium aluminate showed the highest catalytic performance under the same reaction conditions. However, even this catalyst has less activity to the commercial γ-Al2O3. Maybe it is because of sulfur and sodium contaminate could not remove completely during washing step.
