The copolymers produced from AAm with cationic acrylic monomers like Diallydimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) have been the most common polymeric flocculent because of their low cost and high performance. DADMAC is typically copolymerized with AAm to increase molecular weight and to regulate water solubility and charge density (shown in Fig. 1). The AAm-DADMAC copolymer was synthesized via the solution method into a flask round-bottom equipped with a digital thermometer, mechanical stirrer, a reflux condenser and an automatic feeding system. The procedure consisted of feeding the aqueous solutions of AAm, DADMAC, and Ammonium peroxydisulfate and Iron (II) sulfate in separate streams while maintaining the reaction temperature between 40–50 °C for 4 hours. A small amount of EDTA was also introduced to chelate the stabilizing metal ions. The resulting viscous mixture was diluted with water to obtain a 10% active solids content. The final solution exhibited a Brookfield viscosity of 5800 cps.

As shown in Fig. 2, the FTIR spectrum of the copolymer exhibited characteristic peaks at 1710 and 1660 cm⁻¹ corresponding to the amide carbonyl groups. The band at 1460 cm⁻¹ was attributed to the bending vibration of amino groups, while the absorption at 2960 cm⁻¹ was assigned to the stretching vibration of methylene groups. These characteristic absorption bands confirm the successful synthesis of the AAm–DADMAC copolymer . The flocculation performance was assessed through jar tests using industrial wastewater. Under the optimized conditions, the copolymer demonstrated a strong ability to clarify the wastewater, resulting in a significant reduction in turbidity.
