Synthesis and Application of Cu@GO as an Efficient Catalyst for the Construction of Benzothiazole Synthesis

The development of efficient catalytic systems for the construction of heterocyclic frameworks continues to attract considerable interest due to their widespread applications in pharmaceuticals, biological agents, and functional materials. Benzothiazoles, in particular, represent an important class of sulfur–nitrogen heterocycles with significant synthetic and medicinal relevance. Copper-based catalysts offer attractive advantages for such transformations; however, their limited stability and susceptibility to aggregation often restrict their practical utility. Graphene oxide (GO), with its high surface area, abundant oxygen functionalities, and two-dimensional structure, has recently emerged as an excellent platform for immobilizing metal species [1]. In this work, we report the synthesis and immobilization of copper nanoparticles on graphene oxide, yielding a highly stable Cu@GO catalytic system. The strong interaction between copper species and GO functional groups allows uniform dispersion of active sites and minimizes mass-transfer limitations. The resulting Cu@GO catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic performance in the synthesis of benzothiazole derivatives, demonstrating high conversion, excellent selectivity, and outstanding recyclability over multiple reaction cycles [2]. These results clearly highlight the potential of Cu@GO as an efficient and sustainable catalyst for benzothiazole formation and related organic transformations (Scheme 1).
