| Plant essential oils are natural reservoirs of bioactive compounds that have long been valued in traditional medicine and are increasingly recognized for their potential in modern pharmaceutical, food, and agricultural industries. Despite this promise, their practical use at an industrial scale is often constrained by chemical instability, volatility, and rapid degradation. In this study, the essential oil of Ferulago angulata (Persian name: Chavil), a medicinal plant native to Iran with a rich cultural and therapeutic background, was extracted through hydrodistillation, yielding 0.25% w/w of oil. Chemical profiling identified α-pinene (10.011%), α-phellandrene (8.675%), β-phellandrene (6.922%), and Z-β-ocimene (43.968%) as the major constituents, reflecting the plant’s diverse biological activity. To overcome inherent limitations, the oil was encapsulated within a biocompatible polymeric matrix using nanoemulsion technology. Microscopic and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses revealed nanoparticles with an average size of 20.3 nm, a novel achievement that underscores the innovation of this work. The nanocapsules exhibited high encapsulation efficiency, uniform particle distribution, and enhanced stability against light, heat, and oxidation. Importantly, controlled-release profiling demonstrated the gradual liberation of bioactive compounds, leading to significantly improved antioxidant and antimicrobial performance compared to the free oil. These findings highlight the nanoencapsulation of Ferulago angulata essential oil as a sustainable and innovative model that bridges traditional knowledge with modern chemical engineering, opening new perspectives for pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and agricultural applications. |
