Functionalized TiO₂ for Absorbing CO₂ from Natural Gas

The aim of the present study was to purify natural gas from carbon dioxide impurity using a diethanolamine (DEA) solution containing functionalized titanium dioxide. In this study, TiO₂ particles were synthesized by sol-gel method and functionalized with polydopamine to create polar –OH and –NH₂ groups on the surface of the nanoparticles. Characterization using XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed the successful functionalization. Absorption experiments were performed using synthetic gas mixtures containing 1000 ppm CO₂ under ambient conditions. The carbon dioxide absorption performance of functionalized TiO₂ in DEA solutions showed that increasing the TiO₂ concentration to 1000 ppm resulted in more than fourfold removal of CO₂ from the solution, resulting in a favorable increase in absorption performance.
