| Development of an Alginate-Chitosan Hemostatic Gel Incorporating Thyme Extract with Antibacterial Properties |

| Uncontrolled bleeding and wound infection are critical challenges in emergency medicine and surgical care. This study reports the development of a biocompatible hemostatic gel based on an alginate–chitosan system incorporated with thyme (Thymus vulgaris) extract. Alginate, an anionic polysaccharide capable of rapid ionic gelation, was combined with cationic chitosan to form a polyelectrolyte complex, while thyme extract was added to provide antibacterial activity [1, 2]. The gel was prepared through solution blending followed by ionic crosslinking. Structural characterization was performed using FTIR spectroscopy, and the porous morphology was examined by SEM. Hemostatic performance was evaluated through fluid absorption capacity, blood-clotting time, and mechanical stability tests. The results indicated that the alginate–chitosan network significantly enhanced blood absorption and reduced clotting time. The incorporation of thyme extract effectively inhibited the growth of common wound pathogens without compromising hemostatic efficiency. These findings suggest that the developed alginate–chitosan gel containing thyme extract is a promising candidate for advanced wound dressings and emergency hemostatic applications. |
