Optimization of Extraction and Enrichment of Polyphenols from Vaccinium arctostaphylos and Evaluation of Their Biological Activities

Introduction: Vaccinium arctostaphylos is a rich source of polyphenolic compounds, particularly anthocyanins such as malvidin and cyanidin, which exhibit strong antioxidant and biological activities. These bioactive compounds make the berry a valuable source for functional food and pharmaceutical applications. However, effective methods to extract and enrich these compounds are limited. This study aimed to optimize the extraction and enrichment of polyphenols from black chokeberry and evaluate their biological activities.

Methods: Extraction parameters were optimized, and the obtained extracts were enriched using XAD-10 and LAD resins (Scheme 1). The polyphenolic content, including malvidin and cyanidin, was quantified using HPLC analysis.

Results: The enrichment process led to a significant increase in malvidin and cyanidin content in the samples after treatment with XAD-10 and LAD resins. The optimized conditions provided highly enriched polyphenolic fractions, demonstrating strong antioxidant and biological activities.

Conclusion: The developed method effectively enhances the polyphenol content in this extracts, particularly malvidin and cyanidin, offering a promising approach for obtaining bioactive-enriched fractions for potential applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.
