| Crude oil emulsions stabilized by natural surfactants like asphaltenes and resins pose significant challenges in upstream processing, leading to increased water content and salt levels that cause corrosion, fouling, and reduced refinery efficiency. This study introduces a novel additive derived from styrene-maleic anhydride modified with a C12-C18 fatty amine to improve the performance of conventional demulsifiers in laboratory-scale water-oil separation and desalting of Abozar crude oil. The additive was synthesized via free radical solution polymerization at 80°C using benzoyl peroxide as initiator, followed by imidization in toluene at 120°C for 4 hours, yielding a hydrophobic-hydrophilic amphiphilic structure. The modified product was characterized by FTIR analysis, acid value titration, and evaluation of key physical properties, including viscosity and solubility (complete miscibility in aromatic hydrocarbons like toluene/xylene at 10 wt%, partial in aliphatic solvents, insoluble in water). The additive was blended with a commercial demulsifier from ACECR (JABL) at varying doses (10-50 ppm), with 10% additive concentration showing the best performance, and tested via bottle tests on Abozar crude (20% water cut, 150,000 ppm initial salt, API 32°). At 65°C, the optimized blend achieved 95% water separation in 30 minutes (vs. 72% for base JABL demulsifier) and reduced salt content to 25 ppm (vs. 85 ppm), outperforming the control by 23% in separation efficiency and 70% in desalting. This superior performance is attributed to enhanced interfacial activity, asphaltene displacement, and droplet coalescence facilitated by the hydrophobic chains and polar groups of the additive. These results demonstrate the potential of the fatty amine-modified additive as a cost-effective, tunable enhancer for commercial demulsifier formulations like JABL in oil-fields like Abozar. |
